Round green door and tree on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A round green door with a brass knob sits in a grassy hillside framed by a leafy tree above and pink flowers to the sides. Below the door, the words There and Back Again are written in a script lettering. The linework is clean and outlined, with soft shading on the tree and hill, and the colours are mainly greens, teal, pink and brown.

The lift in Carrick House had been dead since March, so Mrs Ruddock and I took the stairs with her shopping between us, one bag of potatoes splitting at the handles on every landing. On the ninth floor she stopped to rest against the wall and nodded at the door painted there. Someone had done it in a green so bright it looked wet, round as a porthole, with a brass knob and a crooked tree leaning over a grassy bank of brick, pink flowers tucked at its edges.

Kit had painted that. Not on this wall, but on his bedroom door at number 41, where the council sent a man in a van to sand it off in April. He'd told the whole block it was a proper hobbit hole and that if you walked through it you ended up somewhere with better bread. The words went too. There and back again, he'd written underneath, in his best joined-up. When the van man had gone, Kit sat on the stairs and said that was only the back again part, and nobody could argue with a boy who had the tin of gloss in his lap.
That night I took the leftover gloss from under the sink and painted a door on the stairwell wall, round and green, with a brass knob I'd bought off a stall for fifty pence. I didn't draw the hill or the flowers. I just stood back and waited to feel foolish, which I did for about a minute.
In the morning there was a tea light on the sill below it, unlit, and a note tucked under the knob in capitals that said MIND THE STEP. Kit read it, put his own shoes on without help, and went down ahead of me, touching the green door as he passed, as if checking it was still there.
