Row of colourful houses around an ankle

Ankle · Colour · Photo

A band of small, simple townhouses in pink, red, blue, green and yellow runs around the ankle, with pointed and sloped roofs and a few tiny birds perched on the rooftops. The illustration uses soft, clean outlines and flat colour fills with light shading, and the design sits neatly along the skin above a brown slip-on shoe. The rest of the frame is plain: black trousers, a pale wall and a light wooden floor.

The ladder was still against the end house when the band started tuning across the road, and Nell had only got as far as the green door. Mr Okafor from the Pell Rooms had asked for the whole terrace in cream, the way the council liked it, but she had mixed the pinks on the back step that morning and she was not going to see them go under a single coat of primrose.

"You'll have the constable out," said Sol, who kept the chandlery and had come to hold the ladder steady for her, which he did badly and with enormous patience.

"Let him come. These houses were painted like this before there were any council men to ask."

She worked fast, the way her grandmother had taught her to paint boats, a thin wash first and then the hard edges. On each roof she set a bird, a small thing with a bent beak, because the pigeons had sat there all summer and she felt they had earned their keep. By nine the row ran from the bakery to the water like a tin of sweets someone had left open on the windowsill.

When the first couples came out of the dance hall for air, they stopped on the pavement and looked up. Nobody said anything for a while. Then Mr Okafor appeared in the doorway with his tie loosened, squinting at the pink house and the red one beside it, and he laughed, a real laugh, and asked the band to play something quick.
