Elephant driving a red car on ankle
Ankle · Colour · Photo
A small cartoon elephant with a grey body and black eye mask sits behind the wheel of a red car with black wheels. The outlines are clean and uniform, with flat fills of grey and red and no shading. The motif sits alone on the ankle against plain skin, with a dark trouser hem and tan suede shoe in the frame.

By the time the ovens were hot at ten to four, the red car was already idling in the lane behind our bakery, headlamps off, engine ticking. I knew the elephant before I knew his name. He wore a black mask over his eyes like a cartoon bank robber, and he always parked with two wheels on the kerb, out of courtesy to the bins.

Nobody in the bakery believed me when I said he came for the bread. Marjorie thought he was from the council. Dev reckoned he was a rival sent to measure our crumb. I propped the back door with a sack of flour and waited, because a creature who drives through Sheffield before dawn wants something specific, and I wanted to know what.
On the last Thursday of the month he finally got out. He folded his grey bulk through the doorway, lifted off the mask with the care of a man removing a bow tie, and asked in a voice like a cello left in a cupboard for one plain tin loaf, still warm. I wrapped it in brown paper. He paid in ten-pence pieces, counted them twice, then pushed a folded note across the flour: Thank you for not asking why I drive at night.
I didn't ask. I watched the red car pull away with the loaf on the passenger seat, the mask back in place, the wheels leaving two neat tracks through the frost. Next morning there was a jar of marmalade on the step, the lid tied with string, and a single ten-pence piece balanced on top of it, as if he had worked out exactly how much a silence was worth.
