Edie found the camera in the wet leaves by the back gate, its strap looped round a dead dahlia stalk as if someone had meant to come back for it. The lens was clean. The body was cold and heavier than it looked, and when she turned the film wheel it clicked twice, the way a thing does when it still has something left to say.

The chemist on Fenner Road still developed film on Thursdays. The lad behind the counter held the negatives up to the window one by one, squinting, and said there were nineteen frames, all taken in the garden: the rhubarb bed, the washing line, a robin on the fence post with its head cocked. Edie paid for the prints and walked home slowly, reading the dates pencilled on the paper sleeves.

The last frame was the path. Tarmac going grey with rain, a few oak leaves stuck to it, and at the bottom edge a pair of black canvas trainers stepping out of the shot. It had been taken from low down, close to the ground, as if whoever held the camera had crouched for the angle and then forgotten to stand up again.

She pinned the print to the shed door beside the others, where the rhubarb and the robin already hung, and left the lens cap off the camera on the windowsill so the light could reach it.
