Small T-rex tattoo on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A legs-and-boots shot showing a small, cartoon-style T-rex on the outer calf of one leg. The dinosaur is outlined with clean linework and shaded in greens, blues and yellows. It sits against bare skin, with a pink backdrop and a wooden plinth framing the composition.

The T-rex costume had been losing its teeth since June, and by the third Saturday in August Dougie Frane was spending more time picking felt scraps off the pier than handing out leaflets. The head was a papier-mâché affair the colour of pond water, and its left eye had come unstuck, so it rolled about like a loose marble whenever he jerked his neck. Mr Halloran, who ran the amusements and had never once paid for a repair, told him to stop fussing and just roar louder.

So he roared. He lumbered along the boards with his tail swinging, scaring gulls and toddlers in roughly equal measure, until a girl in yellow wellies planted herself in front of him and refused to be frightened at all. She was about four. She had a marker pen in one fist and a sticky bun in the other, and she informed him that dinosaurs were not allowed to be sad.
"You're sad," she said. "Your eye is falling out."
He crouched down, which made his knees crack like kindling, and she licked her thumb and pressed the eye back into place. Then she uncapped the pen and drew a row of spiky bumps down his green foam leg in blue and yellow, very carefully, with her tongue poking out the corner of her mouth.
When her mum came to fetch her, she waved at the dinosaur with her whole arm. Dougie waved back with his claw. He went home that night and didn't wash the leg for a week.
