Row of small cacti on an inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A row of seven small cacti and succulents runs along the inner forearm, including a prickly pear, a tall columnar cactus, a barrel cactus and an aloe-like plant. The linework is thin and even, drawn in solid black with no shading. The skin is pale and the background is a dark leather surface, with the composition centred on the tattoo.

Her grandson Idris came up in the dusk with his fists closed. He had found a seed pod on the path, pale as an egg, and wanted to know whether it would grow in the one pot that stood empty.

"The pots only keep what the wall gives them. Ask the barrel. It has been drinking from its own belly for forty years."
Next morning a thin cloud sat over the far ridge, and by midday there was a smell like struck flint. The rain came in a single hour and went again. Old Maren stood in it with her palms open and laughed until she coughed. When the sun returned, the seed pod had split, and a green hook was pushing up through the crack in the clay, curling towards the light like a question.
