Small script tattoo on a lower back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman lies face down on a light towel on sand, wearing a black bikini, with the head cropped out of frame. A small, dark script tattoo sits on her lower back near the hip, with thin linework and little shading. The warm, bright sunlight and the blurred sea and people in the background make up the rest of the composition.

Dear Tom,

The post van only comes up the hill on Tuesdays, so this will sit on the mat by the kettle until Mrs Ferris remembers to take it down. I have decided the sea here is a liar. Yesterday it promised me the slip and gave me a wet boot instead.

Dad's ledger from the chandlery is open on the table beside me. His hand is all over the margins, every tide and every sail, and I have been copying the line he wrote beside the mooring rope because it is the only thing I can read without crying: keep the line short, the water will come to meet you. I thought it was nonsense until Thursday, when the Mary Jane drifted in on a slack tide with nobody at the tiller and the rope lying exactly where he said it would.

I am not selling the boat. I know you think I should. I know the man from Harwich has sent three letters and turned up once in a good coat. But I walked down the slip this morning and wrote the words on the back of my hand in pencil, the way he used to, and when the tide came over my boots it did not drown me. It only wanted to be let in.

Come in August if you can. Bring the good tin of tea and leave the suit at home. The line is still short. The water is still coming.

Your sister, Nell
