Vegvisir compass with runic ring
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a black linework drawing of a Vegvisir, a compass-like symbol with eight arms, each ending in a small stave-style mark, centred within a thin circle. A thick outer ring is filled with runic characters arranged around its full circumference. The design uses solid black lines on white with no shading or grey tones, and the composition is symmetrical and centred.

Keep your hands in your armpits and listen, because the bells are the only thing up here that will tell you the truth. That was the winter the Hallsteg pass shut like a fist, the winter Ingrid Vold's two brothers took the goats up after the strays and the sky came down on them before noon.

Their mother had a copper disc on a cord, scratched all round its rim with letters nobody in the valley could read any more, and eight arms reaching out from the middle. She wore it under her shawl for forty years. When Ingrid was small she pressed it into her palm and said, the arms will lie to you in a blizzard, so put your back to the one that points where you came from and let the rim tell you the rest.
So Ingrid went up with the disc flat on her glove and the snow stinging her eyes shut. Twice the arms swung like a dog catching a scent and she cursed them, and twice she stopped and turned until the rim lined up with a bell she could still just hear. At the cairn she found Tor sitting on a rock with his knees under his chin, the goats milling behind him, and no Halvard at all.
She did not shout. She knelt in the drift, scraped a circle with her heel the way her mother had scratched the copper, and drew the eight arms through the snow until she trusted them. Then she set her brother's shoulder towards the lowest light and said, that way. Halvard was asleep in the lee of the wall with his cap pulled down, and when they woke him he swore the bells had been ringing all afternoon.
