Running horse on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bold black tattoo of a horse in a full gallop, facing left, with a flowing mane and tail. The body is drawn as a single outline with solid black shapes for the mane, legs and underside, leaving the pale skin visible as the horse's body. The tattoo is shown in black ink only, centred on the forearm against plain skin.

Dear Tom,

The pony went off the end of the slipway on Tuesday, the way you always said she would. Nobody saw her go. We found the gate open and the hay still stacked, and Mr Penhallow walked the cliff path twice before he came back with his cap in his hands. The dark mare with the white blaze, the one you named for the sea spray on her, had simply decided the harbour was too small.
Thursday the boats came in early, and the lads from the Mary Ellen stood on the quay arguing about whether she'd gone inland or over the headland. Ruth Bray swore she saw something running along the tideline at dawn, its tail streaming out behind like a flag, but Ruth also swears the gulls talk to her, so nobody took it seriously.
I went out myself this morning with a bucket of oats and a bad feeling. The sand was still wet from the tide, and there, plain as a signature, were her hoof marks heading north in a line that stretched and stretched, the prints spaced wider than any walk. She had been running flat out. I followed them to the rocks at Gull Point and lost them where the shingle turns to shale.
I haven't told Mr Penhallow. I think he'd rather hear she's got somewhere to run to. Come home when you can, and bring the good tide tables. I'll keep the oats in the tack room in case she thinks better of it.
Love, Nan
