Nobody claimed the dinosaur for eleven weeks. It sat on the top shelf of the lost property cupboard at Harrowden Junction, between a single glove and a violin case nobody wanted, a flat black shape no taller than a biro lid, its jaw open as if it had just heard the 14:10 announced. Gerald, who ran the office and disliked anything without a label, tied a card to its tail that read toy, unknown owner, and went home at five on the dot.

Ruth Acheson, who had collected tickets on the Harrowden line for nineteen years, found it again in March while hunting for an umbrella that wasn't there. She turned it over in her palm. It was solid all the way through, no eyes, no seams, the sort of thing somebody had cut from card or sheet metal and never bothered to paint. It was heavier than it looked. She put it in her coat pocket, meaning to ask around, and forgot it there until the washing day, when it came out with a sandwich receipt and a bus pass gone soft as cloth.
She thought about the boy she had seen on platform two that autumn, the one who had stood by the bench for three trains, arguing with a toy while his mother read the paper. She had never learned his name. She took the dinosaur back to the platform on a Tuesday, when the wind was coming straight down the tracks, and set it on the bench where the boy used to sit.
She wrote a new card in capitals and tucked it under the creature's foot: FOUND. ONE DINOSAUR. STILL GOING SOMEWHERE.
