Black cat silhouette on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black silhouette of a cat in mid-stride, facing left with its tail raised in a curve. The shape has smooth, clean outlines with no interior detail or shading, and it is rendered in black ink only. It sits alone on the inner forearm, close to the wrist, with plenty of plain skin around it against a dark grey fabric.

The fair came into Thornley the week after the hiring fair, six wagons and a steam organ that wheezed like an old man on the stairs. Mrs Ada Pell kept the rifle gallery, and she had a black cat that nobody had ever seen fed. It walked ahead of the lead wagon every time the fair moved on, never looking back, its tail up like a flag to say the road was clear.

The cat had come to her in a hard winter at Carlisle, thin as a rake, and she had never asked where it came from. The men said it was bad luck to keep a cat that did not sleep in the same place twice. Ada said it was bad luck to have men who did not check the ropes, and after that they stopped saying anything at all.
In the autumn the fair reached the bridge at Corran Water, where the river had come up brown and fast. The organ man swore the wagons would not cross until morning. Ada watched the cat walk out onto the wet planks, stop at the middle, and turn its head towards the far bank. Then it went on, mid-stride, tail curved, and did not stop until it reached the other side. The planks held. Ada led the horses across behind it, one slow step after another.
Nobody ever found the cat again, though the fair still comes through Thornley every year. When it leaves, something dark goes out ahead on the road, and the drivers say to follow its tail.
