Fern and mountain range along a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single unbroken black line runs across the forearm, with a fern frond at the elbow end and a range of peaks at the wrist end. The mountains are drawn in fine outline with stippled dotwork shading on their slopes and faces. The ink is black only, and the long horizontal composition sits neatly along the length of the arm against a dark background.

The last fern before the village is the one your grandmother always pointed at, its fronds curled like the ends of a bad sentence. Past it the path runs out into the bracken, and past the bracken there is nothing but the line of the ridge, drawn in one stroke against a sky that has not yet decided on weather. You have been told the peaks are a day's walk. Everyone who says so has never walked it in boots that pinch.

Pauline at the post office hands you a loaf wrapped in greaseproof paper and says the mountain makes its own weather, so you should not trust the look of it from below. You do not trust it. You trust the line instead, the one thread that runs from the forest's edge straight to the highest notch, because a surveyor laid it out that way in 1911 and never once bent it for anyone.

By the second afternoon the trees thin and the path stops being a path. You sit on a flat stone, eat the bread, and look back. The fern is a small dark thing now, the village only a smudge of smoke. The peaks have grown teeth. Every slope of them is speckled with shadow where the light has not reached, and you understand that the shading is not dark at all but the place where the mountain keeps its secrets.

You reach the saddle at dusk. Below you the whole county lies folded like a map nobody has bothered to open, and the line you walked is still there, unbroken, running back down to the trees. You pull your coat tight and find you are smiling, which is ridiculous, because nobody is watching and the wind is cold enough to split stone. Still, you raise a hand towards the fern somewhere in the dark below and say its name aloud.
