Lavender sprig on the upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A lavender sprig with three flower spikes and several slender green stems, tied together at the base. The flowers are shaded in muted purples and greys with dark outlines, while the stems and leaves use soft green tones. The sprig is centred on the upper arm against a plain skin background, with greenery behind.

You have the oven lit before the street lamps give up on Harrow Lane, and the flour is already hanging in the air. Your aunt Mirela left you the bakery, the lease, and a tin of dried lavender she swore was older than the building. Today you are meant to be shaping the Sunday loaves, but your hands keep drifting back to the tin.

She used to tie lavender into small bundles with kitchen string, gathering the stems at the base and hanging them upside down over the proving racks so the warmth would draw the scent through the room. You copy her. You pinch three spikes from the tin, their buds dry and grey-purple as old wool, and the stems are still faintly green where the string bit into them. You wind the string twice around and knot it the way she showed you, and it holds.
Customers come at six. A man in a hi-vis jacket wants a plain bloomer, and a student who buys the lavender shortbread every Friday pays in coins and says nothing about it. You sell what you can. The bundle hangs by the till, and nobody asks what it is for.
The recipe card is propped against the scales in Mirela's square capitals: LESS THAN YOU THINK. You add a pinch to the dough, then tip half of it back into the tin. By the time the sun clears the car park roofs, the whole back room smells of a field you never saw her visit, and the first loaves are coming out gold.
