Sailing ship in a stormy sea sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large sailing ship with full sails heels over in rough, churning water, with a dark rocky outcrop rising from the waves in the lower part of the design. The linework is soft and the shading is detailed, with smooth grey gradients in the sails, spray and clouds. The piece is entirely black and grey and fills the arm in a sleeve-style composition.

The barometer in the chart room had been falling since Tuesday, and by the time Mrs Ashdown's boy came aboard with the lamp oil, the Marigold Ruth was heeling so far over that the cook had lashed the pans to the hooks and given up on supper. Tobias Penrose stood at the wheel with his oilskin streaming and watched the grey sea climb the bow like something trying to get over a wall. He had sailed these waters for twenty-two years and knew the rock they called the Widow's Thumb by its shape, not its name, and tonight it was somewhere off the larboard quarter, invisible under the spume but close enough that he could feel it in the set of the water.

He had told the owner in Falmouth that the topsails should come down before the squall reached them. The owner had not been on deck. Now the mainsail was drumming like a frightened horse and the fore staysail had split along its seam with a crack that went through the ship like a gunshot. Tobias did not shout. He had learned long ago that the men looked at the wheel when the captain's voice went quiet, and he needed them looking at the wheel.
At the first grey light the wind dropped as suddenly as it had risen. The Marigold Ruth lay wallowing in a long, heaving swell with her canvas hanging in tatters and her decks awash, and there, a cable's length to leeward, the black hump of the Widow's Thumb stood clear of the water with a gull perched on its crown. Tobias took off his hat and looked at it for a long time, and then he went below to find the cook and tell him the supper could wait.
