Sailing ship under a full moon on a leg

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large sailing ship with full rigging sits on calm water, with a pale full moon and dark clouds behind it. The tattoo uses fine, detailed linework for the rigging and hull, with soft, smudged shading across the clouds and moon. The composition is centred and fills the limb, and the image is in black and grey only.

The moon was up over the Dogger Bank the night the cook went overboard, and I'll tell you plain, it was the only light we had for three days. Ada Pryce had the wheel that watch, a girl of nineteen from Whitby who'd signed on under her dead brother's name, and she never once looked down at the water. She looked up at the mainmast, where the rigging hung black against that white disc like the ribs of something that had died eating the moon.

We lost the cook, aye, and we lost the spare anchor chain to the same squall, and by dawn the mate was cursing the lot of us for fools. But the cloud came off the sky the way it does when the wind turns round, and there she was, the whole sea laid flat and silver under our keel, not a ripple on it. Not a ripple. You could hear the hull creak like a man stretching in his sleep.

Ada never told the mate where she'd learned to read the sky. She just kept her hand on the spoke and sang the names of the sail-trims under her breath, one for every line in the rigging, until the sun came up behind us. When we raised the Humber two days after, she climbed down the ratlines with a bundle of her brother's letters tucked inside her shirt and didn't say one word about it. I've thought about that moon every night since. It's the only thing I've ever seen that looked as steady as Ada did.
