Sailboat at sea on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A sailboat with two sails sits on the water, with a small buoy and line in the foreground and clouds drawn across the upper area. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft gradients on the waves and sky that suggest a calm, hazy sea. The palette is mostly grey and muted tones, with a warm pink wash in the sky.

The fair came to Shingle Bay the week the herring boats stopped going out, and it brought a painted backcloth nobody had asked for. Old Tobias Wren, who ran the swingboats and the coconut shy, had hung it from the poles of his booth so the sea would have something to look at besides itself. It showed a two-masted boat sailing out under a pink evening, with a cork float bobbing on the water and its line trailing behind.

Mary Gaunt, who sold toffee apples from the cart beside him, said the boat was wrong. A cutter with two sails belonged to the Penhallow family, she said, and they had gone down off the Head in a squall twenty years before. Tobias only shrugged and said he had painted what he remembered seeing, and that a man could not remember a thing that was not there.
That night the wind came round from the west and the sea went flat and grey as pewter. Mary woke to a knocking against the cart wheels. She went down to the shingle and found a float on a fine line, pulled taut toward the water, and at the far end of it a small boat with two sails, drifting in without a crew, its canvas silver with haze.
She hauled the line in hand over hand until her palms burned. At the end of it she found a wooden buoy painted with a name she had not read since childhood, and beneath it, tied in a clove hitch, the cork float from the backcloth. In the morning Tobias took the cloth down and folded it, and it was never hung again.
