Sailing ship on waves with anchor
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A three-masted sailing ship with furled and full sails sits on top of stylised, interlocking waves. A thin rope descends from the waves to a small anchor at the bottom of the image. The design is drawn in solid black with clean outlines and no shading, set against a plain cream background.

No, sit down, the ship isn't going anywhere yet, and nor am I until this tea's stewed. You want to know how the Marigold came to hang over the Qasr road like a kite with no string? Then listen, and mind the cup. It's the last clean one.

Forty summers back a woman called Hester Vane drove a lorry of salt along this stretch. Her father had been bosun on a Bristol barque before the sea gave up on him, and he left her one rule: never cut an anchor line until you know what's at the bottom. So when the wind came off the dunes and filled the sails of a ship nobody had seen before, she stopped the lorry, climbed the nearest rise, and watched it sail over the sand, the dunes rolling beneath it like swell.
Its anchor kept catching in the dunes, ploughing furrows that glowed blue at dawn. Every night the crew hauled it up a little, and every morning it sank back down. Hester swore it was searching. Her father always said anchors don't search, they hold.
She walked the rope for three days with a water bottle and a torch. On the fourth morning she found the flukes buried in a wadi, hooked through the bones of a ship's bell, with a brass plate that read Marigold, Bristol, 1871. She laid her palm on it. The wind dropped, the sails went slack, and the whole ship came down soft as a folded letter onto the sand. Hester still drives this road. Some nights she stops here for tea, and she says the Marigold only sails when someone forgets to let go.
