Sak yant script on forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a bare forearm showing a set of black, thin-lined sacred script and symbols arranged in vertical rows, with a second band of script wrapping near the wrist. The linework is fine and even, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The arm is shown from the side against a warm, cluttered indoor background, and the person's face is not visible.

Mae Noi had been holding the ink pot for three hours when the monk finally set down his bamboo tapping stick and asked her to fetch the lamp. The rain had stopped over the river. Outside the temple gate the tuk-tuks idled with their drivers asleep across the seats, and the bell of the night noodle cart rang twice down the lane.

The young man on the mat had not spoken since he arrived. He had brought a folded sheet of paper with the letters copied out in pencil, each one checked against a book, and he kept smoothing it on his knee as though it might blow away. The monk took it, read it without expression, and said the letters were correct but the order belonged to his grandmother's village, not to the city. Mae Noi had to hold the lamp closer while he traced the rows again.
The tapping began, a small wooden knock and then a sharp sting, like someone sorting dried beans into a tin. Each row took a long time. The monk kept his breath slow and counted under his breath, and when the last vertical line was finished he wiped it with a damp cloth and turned the work toward the light so the young man could see.
Afterwards the monk tore a strip from the pencil sheet, tucked it into the drawer of old designs, and said nothing about it. Mae Noi found it there months later, under a hundred other copied letters, all of them carefully checked and none of them quite finished.
