Small snowflake tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small snowflake with six arms and fine branching detail sits on the inner wrist, shown in dark ink. The linework is thin and even, and the design is simple with no shading. The photograph is taken at an angle with the hand raised, showing the wrist against a black sleeve and a wooden chair in the background.

The heating in the Palais died at half past nine, and by ten the breath of the dancers hung over the floor like a second, slower band. You know where the stopcock lives, so you take the torch from behind the bar and climb the ladder into the loft, testing each board before you trust it. Mr Haskell swore the boiler would outlive him, and he may yet prove right, because the trouble is up here, a pipe gone white with frost.

Under the torch the rafters glitter like the underside of a cake. Every pane in the roof has grown its own ferns and stars, and when you breathe on the glass the crystals bloom out again, six arms each, branching finer than cotton. Your gran used to say no two were ever alike, and you spend a minute believing her, nose an inch from the window, until the cold makes your fingers useless and you have to go back down.

On the floor the band has slowed to a foxtrot to keep people warm. Edie from the cloakroom has pinned a snowflake cut from an old hymn sheet to the rail of the stage, and someone has written Eleven degrees on it in biro. You work the wrench loose, tell Haskell it was only the lagging, and watch the room thaw into laughter one couple at a time.

Later, when the pipe is wrapped and the radiators cough back to life, you stand by the loft hatch and find the windows already clear, as if the frost had never been. Only the paper flake stays on the rail, its arms bent a little from the damp, and nobody dances near it.
