Salmon nigiri sushi with bubbles on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of a salmon nigiri piece, with a black nori band wrapped around an orange fish slice that has pale stripes of fat. Small blue and pink bubbles float up beside the sushi, and the design is drawn with defined outlines and soft shading. The bright orange, black and blue ink sits against pale skin on a lower leg, with a plain light background.

The landlady of the Gull and Lantern kept a salmon in the scullery bath for three days before anyone thought to ask why it was not being eaten. Mrs Pellow said it had come up the estuary on the flood tide, belly-first, and had simply stayed. Her lodgers ate their kippers and toast and did not look at the bath.

A widower from Bristol, who paid his rent in coins he counted twice, took to sitting by the scullery door each morning. He talked to the fish about the price of coal and the mess the gulls made of the bins. The salmon, he said, answered by turning once in the water, and he took that for agreement.
On the fourth morning the bath was empty and the back step was wet all the way down to the sea wall. Mrs Pellow found a strip of dried black seaweed on the flagstones, rolled tight around a pinch of cooked rice, and nothing else. Nobody could say who had cooked the rice. The widower said the fish had wanted a last meal before going home, and that it had paid for it in bubbles.
The landlady scrubbed the bath and left the bill unpaid under the teapot. On still nights, she said, small bells rose out of the bay one after another and floated up past the harbour lamps like breath off a cold glass. She kept the scullery window open a crack all that winter, in case.
