Samurai cat in armour design
Japanese · Mixed · Flash
The design shows a white cat with a fierce expression wearing lacquered samurai armour with a red and gold helmet. Pink leaves and dark foliage fill the background around the figure. The linework is bold and outlined, with flat areas of green, red, pink and black, and the armour plates are rendered with a repeated lamellar pattern.

The helmet had been meant for a daimyo's horse, or so the innkeeper's wife insisted, and it sat on the white cat's head like a rice bowl on a post. Snow had closed the Kurosaka pass for nine days, and the only lodger who did not complain was the cat who lived under the hearth. She had found the armour in the storeroom behind the sake casks, green lacquer laced with black cord, and one morning she dragged every plate of it out into the yard, as if she had been waiting her whole life for the chance.

The trouble was the foxes. Three of them had come down from the cedars, lean and patient, and they took to sitting at the gate at dusk with their tails folded neatly round their feet. The innkeeper's son, Kenji, wanted to throw stones. The cat only lifted her chin and walked to the gate, the red and gold helmet catching the last of the light, and sat down opposite the eldest fox.
Nobody ever learned what passed between them. Kenji swore he heard a sound like a flute. By morning the foxes were gone, and in the snow beside the gate lay a scatter of fallen cherry petals, though no tree grew for a mile in any direction. The cat came in, shook the flakes from her plates, and ate her fish as if nothing had happened.
When the pass finally opened that spring, the innkeeper hung the armour on a peg above the door. The cat would not be parted from the helmet, and each night she climbed up to sleep beneath its brim, one ear poking out of the lacquer like a banner left up after the battle.
