Red oni with dragons and thunder clouds

Japanese · Colour · Flash

A painted Japanese style design shows a red oni figure at the centre, holding thunder drums with traditional swirl motifs and wearing a gold and patterned loincloth. Blue dragons coil around the figure's arms and lower body, set against swirling grey and black clouds and gold lightning bolts. The design is drawn on a white background with fine outlines, detailed scale patterns and smooth flat colour, and two cropped panels of other artwork appear at the left and right edges.

Inspector Maren Tolan had stamped four hundred crates that week and never once been asked to open one. The lorry from the Kessel valley came up the switchbacks at dusk, its tyres hissing on wet tarmac, and the driver handed over papers describing "ceremonial percussion, lacquered, wood, three units" with a shrug that suggested he had never lifted them himself.

She opened the first crate anyway. Inside, nested in straw, were three drums bound with red cord, each painted with a ring of spiralling grey clouds. Under the lid of the largest, someone had written in faded ink the name of a village that had been drowned by a reservoir forty years ago. The shed air went close and metallic, the way it does before a storm breaks over the ridge. Somewhere up the valley a dog stopped barking.

When she turned around, the driver was gone, his tail lights already small on the road. Behind her the drum gave a low, deliberate knock, like a knuckle testing a door. Then a second. She stood with her palm flat on the lacquer and understood that the thunder she had been hearing all evening was not over the hills at all.

She signed the manifest with the time of the knock and the single word "held". By morning the checkpoint was quiet, the crates still sealed, and the gold lightning painted on the largest drum looked newer than it had the night before. Past the ridge, a river that had been dry for a decade was running again, and nobody on the far side of the border could say when it had started.
