Saturn tattoo on the side of the waist
Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small ringed planet resembling Saturn is tattooed on the side of the waist, with the body of the planet shaded in dense dots and the rings drawn in clean outlines. The woman's face is not shown, and the image is framed from the waist down with red hair and a denim crop top in view. The tattoo is in black ink only, and the soft natural background keeps the focus on the design.

Brother Oswin had the telescope from Lynn up in the bell tower, and every clear night for a month I climbed up after compline to sit with it, my cold fingers wrapped round a cup of barley water. The abbot wanted Saturn set into the new star chart before Candlemas, and he wanted it right. Through the glass Saturn is no bright thing, only a pale smudge with a shadow across it, so I drew what I could not see.

I worked it in the scriptorium with a goose quill and a pot of iron-gall ink, pricking the globe in dots so close together they grew grey, the way the old masters shaded a bishop's cheek. Each dot took a breath. Brother Oswin said the planet would look like a pebble in a stream if I did not hurry, so I did not hurry. The rings I drew with a ruler and a steady hand, two clean lines and a third, because the glass had shown me three.
On the eve of the feast the abbot came down to inspect my work with his spectacles pushed up into his hair. He held the vellum to the lamp for a long while and said nothing. Then he asked whether I had ever seen the planet with my own eyes. I said only through the glass, and that the glass was cloudy. He laughed and told me the dots were the truest thing in the chart, because a dot is what the eye makes of a light too far away to be a line.
We hung the chart in the cloister that Candlemas. Each winter after, when the frost came on the window of the bell tower, I climbed up and found Saturn still in the sky, a little dimmer, a little paler, and I was glad I had not drawn it too sharp.
