Compass rose on upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small compass rose sits on the upper chest, just below the collarbone, with the face cropped out of frame. The design is drawn in thin black linework with a fine central star and radiating points, and some light shading. The image is entirely black and grey, with the plaid shirt and dark background giving the composition a muted tone.

Uncle Dennis had brought the real thing, the brass compass Dad carried on every trip for thirty years, and he set it on the top table between the wine glasses and the cake knife. The glass face was cracked along one edge. He tapped it twice, the way Dad always did, and the needle shivered, swung, then settled not on north but on the double doors where the caterers were arguing about the chairs.
Priya's hand found mine under the tablecloth. I said the thing I had practised in the car: that a compass doesn't tell you where to go, only which way you are facing when you decide. Then I told them the needle had always pointed at the door whenever Dad came home from sea, and nobody laughed, because that was the joke and it was true.
When we cut the cake, Priya set the compass beside the first slice. Freed of the iron in the table legs, the needle turned slowly round until it found the window, where the afternoon light was coming in low over the car park.
