The band is halfway through the second chorus when your heel catches the edge of the sprung floor and the whole ballroom tilts toward the glass lamps. You expect the boards to meet you. Instead there is an arm across your back and a hand firm between your shoulder blades, and Walter Pell, who has spent three Saturdays refusing every partner the Palais offers, is holding you upright as if you weighed no more than a coat.

Nobody else stops. The bandleader keeps his tempo, the couples keep turning under the gold scrollwork of the balcony rail, and the cloakroom girl keeps counting shillings behind her hatch. You have walked under that scrollwork every Saturday since you were fifteen, but you have never really read the words painted across the proscenium, and they seem suddenly to be meant for you: the hall was built in 1921 by a man who believed a good floor could forgive a bad step.

"Back, then forward," Walter says into your hair. "You had it. You always had it. You just needed someone to stop you looking down."

He does not let go until the record hisses to its close. The next Saturday you find a faint chalk arrow on the floor where you fell, and beside it, in his square capitals, the words ON THE OTHER FOOT. You step over it three times before you stand on it, and when the band strikes up you lead him out onto the boards without once looking down.
