by Grace script lettering on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows the words "by Grace" written in a flowing cursive script tattooed on the inner wrist. The lettering is in solid black ink with smooth, even strokes and looped capitals on the G and the lower-case b and y. The background is dark and soft-focused, which leaves the pale skin and the black lettering as the clear focus of the composition.

The six of them came back to Hollin Bank on the second Saturday in October, because the school was to be pulled down in spring and somebody had to say goodbye to the bell. Dorothy brought sandwiches wrapped in greaseproof paper. Ray brought his wife, who had never set foot in a schoolroom in her life and wanted to see where the stories came from.

They walked the corridor in single file, the way they had walked it at eleven. Outside the old infants' room stood a bench the wrecking men had not yet taken away. Someone had cut two words into the seat with a penknife, careful and slanting: by Grace. Nobody in the party remembered the bench, though all of them remembered the girl. Grace Ormerod had sat at the back, lent out her nibs and her spare ink, and never once told a teacher who had broken the window.
Dorothy ran a finger along the letters. Her father had made that, she said, the winter he was out of work, and he had told her mum it was the only thing he could finish that season. Ray said the phrase had been Grace's own, the thing she said whenever a bad day turned out fine. We got through by grace, she would say, and laugh, because she meant luck and nothing holier.
They stood a while without talking. Then the wind came round the playground and moved the bell rope, and the bell gave one small note, as if it had been asked a question and was answering in its own time. Ray's wife asked who Grace was. Nobody answered at once, and that, Dorothy said later, was the answer.
