Black fine line tattoo of a heart-shaped cross with the script lettering 'by grace, through faith' on the inner forearm.

Heart cross and 'by grace, through faith' lettering

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black outline of a cross with a heart-shaped loop around its upper section, with the words 'by grace, through faith' in black script lettering beside and below it. The linework is fine and even, and the text is set in a flowing handwritten style. The photograph shows the tattoo on a warm, orange-toned skin surface, framed close up with the design filling most of the image.

Mind the sawdust, my dears, and keep your elbows in, for this is the one about the girl who let go. Pull up that stool, Ada, the one with the good leg.

The Pemberton Travelling Show had lost its big tent to the wind in March and its net to a pawnbroker in Wem by June, so all that was left for the last act of the season was a trapeze, a painted cross on the ring post, and two people who had decided they would not be parted. Lottie Vane flew. Tom Idris caught. Between them they had one good hand and a rope with a heart knotted into it, which Lottie's nan had tied when she was small and told her was there so you always knew which end to hold.

Every night for a month Lottie stood on the plank with her eyes shut and let go. You cannot see a catch, Tom told her. You can only trust that a man who has missed you nine hundred times will not miss the nine hundred and first. That is the whole of it. Not sight. Not skill. Only the faith that the hands will be there, and the grace that they are.

On the last night in Shrewsbury the rain came sideways under the canvas and the bar was slick as soap. Lottie let go. She heard the crowd stop breathing. Then Tom's wrist closed round hers like a tide coming in, and they swung out over the lights together, laughing and soaked through. Afterwards Lottie had the words painted on the caravan door, though she never looked at them. She only ever looked at the hand that was holding hers.
