Psalm 45:13 script on the inner wrist
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo on the inner wrist reads Psalm in flowing cursive lettering, with the reference 45:13 in a neat upright numeral below it. The linework is clean and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The photograph is taken straight on against a plain wall, with the hand angled upward at the top of the frame.

Dear Mari, the gold thread came over the pass on the third mule, wrapped in oilcloth because the sleet got into the saddlebags at Hollin Gate and I near wept when I unpacked it. Forty spools, each one heavier than a child's shoe. Your sister-in-law has counted them twice, and so have I, because the lady's mother has asked for more than the dowry could ever stretch to.

The commission is for the wedding gown, and the mother has a verse she wants stitched into it, the one about the king's daughter being all glorious within, her clothing of wrought gold. I told her the outside of a gown is for the church door and the inside is for the people who love you, so the gold goes into the lining. She laughed and said that was the first sensible thing anyone had told her all month.
So I have been working by lamplight with the shutters closed against the wind, lifting each stitch so the gold sits flat against the silk. The letters are small. I am writing them backwards on the underside, so when the bride turns the cloth over in the candle glow she will read them the right way round, and nobody else will read them at all.
Last night I finished the last line and sat a long while with the needle in my lap. Tomorrow the mule goes back down the pass empty. Tell Peder the stove is lit and the kettle is on the hook, and I will bring you a length of the lining when I come home, cut from the hem, with the words still on it.
