Scallop shell with dotted trail on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A scallop shell with radiating ridges sits above a trail of small dots that leads down to a tiny four-point star and a crescent moon. The linework is thin and even, with the shell outlined and its ridges drawn as single strokes, and the dots are stippled in black ink. The tattoo is in black only, shown small and centred on a pale forearm against a light grey textured background.

The landlady at the Brackwater Inn had already put a kettle on when the last of the coaches gave up on the pass, and she handed you a key before you had stamped the snow off your boots. Room six, she said. The window looks at the sea, though you won't see it tonight. Upstairs, the floorboards gave off the smell of cold wool and pine resin, and somewhere below a man was singing the same verse of a shanty over and over, losing the tune each time.

You found the shell in the drawer of the bedside table, under a dog-eared almanac of tides nobody had consulted since the war. A scallop, pale and ribbed, its edges worn soft by someone's thumb. Pinned beneath it was a note in pencil: For the one who keeps counting the stars. Dot where I was. The handwriting was your sister's, though she had been dead eleven winters, and you had never once been able to say that aloud without the room tilting.
Downstairs the singing stopped. You went to the window and wiped a clear patch in the frost. Beyond the drifts, out past the black line of the headland, the sky had broken open, and a thin moon hung over the water like a clipped fingernail. You traced the dots your sister had left in the wet glass, one after another, down toward the horizon, and counted them under your breath until the last one met the star.
In the morning the road was open, and the landlady was waiting with your bill. You asked her who had stayed in room six before you. She looked at the shell in your palm and smiled as if you had passed a test. Whoever it was, she said, left the trail for the next one.
