Scallop shell on a lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A single scallop shell is drawn in thin black outline, with radiating ribs fanning out from a hinge at the base. The linework is even and uncomplicated, with no shading, and the shell is shown in solid black ink on pale skin. It sits centrally on the lower leg against a blurred, warmly lit background with a striped cloth and a red and black cord around the ankle.

The apples were so heavy that summer the branches had to be propped on forked sticks, and old Hanne Dross would let no child climb until the water was carried. So Piran, who was eleven and sulky about it, hauled two buckets from the well each morning up the orchard rows to the pilgrims sleeping under the trees on their way west.

One of them was a grey-bearded man with a cockle shell pinned to his hat, the same fan of ribs the walkers wore on the road to the coast. He drank his water slowly and asked Piran where the road went after the orchard wall. Piran said he did not know, because he had never been past the wall. The man laughed, unpinned the shell, and pressed it into the boy's palm. Every rib runs back to the same hinge, he said, though they spread wide enough to hold a whole sea between them. Keep hold of it and you will always know which way is home.
Piran kept it in his shirt pocket through the picking. He did not go far, but the shell went everywhere the apples went, down to the cart, up to the loft and into the cider press. Years later, when the orchard had been sold and the road widened to carry lorries, he walked the old wall with the shell still warm in his fist and searched for the man's hinge. There was nothing there but a gate and a grey stone with a notch worn into its top.
He set the shell in that notch the way the man had set it in his hand. Then he went home by the lane, and the first windfall of the season lay in the grass in a fan of red, pointing the way he had come.
