Scorpio zodiac symbol on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small Scorpio zodiac symbol, shaped like a letter m with a pointed arrow tail, is tattooed on the inner wrist. The thin, even black linework is shown against light skin, with a pale blanket in the background. The tattoo sits in the centre of the frame and is the clear focus of the photograph.

The wells at Hollin Edge went dry in the week after the first frost, and by the third morning the women had stopped pretending the buckets held anything but worry. Old Bet Marrow sent her grandson Tam into the beech wood with a heel of bread and orders not to come back without water or a good reason.

Tam went as far as the stone where the path forked and sat down to cry, since there was nobody to see. A creature came out from under the roots, no longer than his hand, dark and glossy, with a body like a hooded seed and a tail that curled over its back and ended in a point like an arrow nocked to a bow. It studied the bread for a long time. Then it stepped off the path, and the tail pointed the way, steady as a compass needle, so Tam followed it between the trees.
At the bottom of a hollow, under a slab of moss, a spring ran clear and cold. The creature sat beside it and waited. 'Drink,' it said, in a voice like dry leaves, 'but carry what you take in your mouth, and do not let a drop touch the ground between here and your door.' Tam did as he was told, walking with his head bent and his cheeks full, and the arrow tail bobbed ahead of him all the way to the village.
When he reached the square his mouth was full and his hands were empty, and the women laughed until they saw his face. He spat the water into the old trough, and it rose through the dry stones as though it had never left. Bet Marrow took the shape he had scratched in the mud with his finger and had a mason cut it into the wall above the pump, where it still is. Nobody in Hollin Edge carries water from that spring in a bucket, and nobody has seen the creature since.
