Script initial C with tiny heart on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black script letter C sits on the inner wrist, with a tiny solid heart at its lower right. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design appears to be a single-needle fine line piece. The photograph is a close, slightly warm-toned shot of the raised hand against a cluttered desk background.

The fair pulled out of Ashworth on a Tuesday, and I was still up the ladder doing the last of the lettering on Constance's candyfloss van when Dolly shouted that the lorry was moving. I finished the stroke anyway. Nobody pays a sign-writer for the bits they can't see from the ground, and Constance had paid me in advance for a single letter, a C in gold leaf with a black outline, no taller than my hand.

She had stood at the foot of the ladder with a cup of stewed tea, watching me sketch. 'Something small,' she said. 'I'm not having my name on the side like a bingo hall. Just the initial my mother gave me.' I drew the C with a looped tail, the way she signed the cheques for tent hire, and when she turned to shout at the generator boy I put a heart in the lower curl, no bigger than a lentil, in black enamel from the tin in my apron.
She found it at the next stop in Lowmoor, when the sun came through the back hatch at six in the morning and lit the paint from the side. She didn't speak for a long while. Then she asked what the heart would cost to have taken off, and I said I didn't know, and she said that was a bad habit for a man in my trade.
Constance is gone now. Her nephew sold the van to a scrapyard in Hull without asking me to re-letter it, and I heard the men cut the panels up for the metal. I still think about that little black heart on the hatch, the one thing on the whole van nobody could sell, sitting in its gold C where you had to tilt your head to find it.
