Scorpion tattoo on a shoulder blade
Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
A shaded scorpion with a curled tail sits across the upper back, close to the shoulder blade, photographed from behind. The body and claws use blue and grey shading with red accents and dark outlining, giving a three-dimensional look. The background is softly out of focus, with a thin chain visible at the top of the frame.

Dear Ottilie, you will think me mad to write from the lighthouse at Scarrow Point, but the keeper has taken the cart to Mallory for lamp oil and I have an hour before the tide turns and the gulls start their racket on the roof. You asked after the scorpion in the pantry, the one Father swore was dead. It is not dead. It lives behind the flour sacks, and last night it climbed the rope of the bell as neat as a clerk going up his own stairs, its tail held high like a question nobody wants to answer.

I went down with the lantern, sure it would be a moth or a bit of dried kelp, and there it was, blue as the underside of a wave, every plate of its armour lit separately, and the red at its joints the colour of the salt-cured herring Mother hangs in the smoke room. It did not run. It lifted its two claws the way the old magistrate lifts his gloves when he means to refuse you bread. I told it, as politely as any girl talks to a beast, that the cellar was not its kingdom, and that the king of Scarrow has been dead these eleven years and left us only debts and this rock.
It went under the sacks. I thought that was the end of it. But this morning there was a little black spiral of tail-tip drawn in soot on the lintel above the door, and beneath it a sentence scratched in a hand neither of us could have managed: the sea keeps what it is given, and the lamp keeps what it sees. I have not yet decided whether that is a warning or an invoice. Come at Michaelmas. Bring your own lantern and do not, whatever you do, put your hand where the flour is.
