Birds and feathers with script on a lower back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a flock of silhouetted birds rising from a large shaded feather, with two smaller feathers below and the script words Time to let go beside the feather. The birds are rendered as solid dark shapes with soft edges, while the feathers use fine grey shading and visible barbs. The image is a close crop of bare skin on the lower back, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a neutral background.

The snow had been falling on Carrick Fell since Tuesday, and by Thursday the lane to the inn had vanished under it. Mrs Ayling, who cooked for us, kept saying the road would open by noon. It never did. Four of us were stuck with the coach party's leftovers, a box of mismatched candles and a fire that ate coal faster than I could fetch it from the yard.

On the third evening the rooks came down. I had gone out to scatter ash on the step and found the sky above the sheep pens thick with them, black and restless, turning over the valley like a shaken sheet. They settled on the drystone wall, then lifted all at once, as if someone had called their names. One came loose from the flock and drifted down past the kitchen window, slow as a dropped handkerchief, and landed on the snow at my boots.
It was a feather, long as my forearm, grey at the base and dark at the tip. I carried it inside and set it on the mantel beside the clock. Mrs Ayling said it was bad luck to keep what the birds had let go. I told her it was only a feather.
The lane opened on the Friday. The coach driver came up through the drifts with a shovel and a grin, and the others packed their bags without a word about the storm. I stayed by the fire a while longer. The feather was still there, pale against the chimney stone, and the rooks had already gone over the ridge, carrying nothing of ours at all.
