Realistic grinning face on lower leg
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A detailed portrait of a face with a wide, toothy grin, stitch-like marks across the skin and glowing red eyes. The shading is smooth and realistic, with strong highlights, deep shadows and fine texture in the hair and skin. Reds, pinks and browns dominate the palette with grey and black used for depth, and the piece fills the frame across the front of the leg.

Sit yourselves down and mind the peat smoke. My grandmother had this from her own mother, who had it from a woman on Eilean Beag who swore she'd seen it with her own two eyes, which is how all the true ones start.

Keep the cold out of the door and listen. There was a man called Tomas Greig who mended nets on the north shore, a quiet man, and one March his wife found him sitting on the rocks at low tide with his mouth stitched shut. Not stitched by him. Stitched by the sea, the old women said, with tarred twine off a wreck, neat as a sailmaker's seam.
He wasn't dead. That was the worst of it. His eyes had gone the colour of coals in a grate, and every night after he'd grin at the cottage window until the glass fogged, and the stitches creaked when he smiled, like rigging in a wind.
Nobody could cut the twine. The minister tried with his good knife and his eyes shut. In the end it was Greig's daughter, young Morag, who took the needle from the net loft and picked out every knot with her teeth while the thing in the chair laughed without a sound. The stitches came away like wet thread, Morag said, and the grin slid off him like a mask left out in the rain. Under it he was only a tired man, and he asked her for his tea.
