The frost had got into the tractor shed again by the time you reached it, and the tin machine sat where your uncle had left it in October, its segmented back dusted white. Its head was turned toward the yard gate as though it were waiting for someone to come back up the lane. You brushed the frost off its jaw with your sleeve and felt the cold go straight through the wool.

Your uncle had built it from a scrapped combine's hydraulic arm, a dented kettle drum and two bicycle springs, and he talked to it the way other men talk to collies. Every winter he oiled its joints, and every winter the lane seemed a little longer to him. Now the farmhouse was sold, the bank man wanted the shed cleared by Friday, and you had a flask of tea going cold on the bench and nobody to argue with about what to keep.

You pulled the tarpaulin off the rest of it and found a card wedged behind the chest panel, written in his big looping hand: Don't let them scrap her, she was never meant to stay grounded. Underneath, in smaller letters, he'd added the thing he always said when the wind came off the top field. You can't take the sky from me, love. It's on loan to all of us.

You wheeled it out into the white light and lashed it to the trailer. When the engine caught, the old thing lifted its head toward the hedge, and the rooks went up all at once from the elms. You let them have the sky, folded the card into your coat pocket, and drove slowly down the lane with the machine looking back over your shoulder.
