Grey shaded paw print tattoo on an ankle with an outlined script letter B and blue highlights on the letter.

Script B over a paw print on an ankle

Lettering · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a paw print tattoo on the side of an ankle. The paw pads and toes are filled with soft grey shading that fades at the edges, and a flowing script letter B is outlined in black across the centre. Blue shading on the strokes of the letter is the only colour, and the design sits centred on the skin with plain background.

Dear Marnie, the dog is asleep on the coat hooks again, which I'm told is his right now that the ferry timetable has gone to pot and nobody in Porthgwidden can agree on anything. I'm writing because you asked me to tell you properly how the Hendry boat sank, and I keep starting the letter and tearing it up. So here it is plain: Bran went over the side in January off the Lantern Rock, and nobody could say why he'd gone near it in that swell. Mr Hendry walked the shingle for three days calling a name that wasn't the dog's name, and then he stopped.

The thing you'll want to know is the stone. Mrs Ellery down by the chandlery had a slate she used for pricing jam, and she wrote on it with a bit of blue chalk, a B in her round hand, and said that was the only letter she'd ever needed for anything that mattered. Then she pressed it into the wet sand beside the high tide line and a paw print came up under it, though none of us had seen a dog walk there that morning. The sea took the chalk by teatime. The print stayed, grey as ash, for a fortnight.

I went down last Sunday with the tide out. The print was gone, but there was a brown bottle cap wedged in the rocks, and I thought of you saying that small things come back if you let them. I've put it on the windowsill beside the kettle. Come at Easter. Bring the good tea and I'll bring the hymn sheets we never sang.

Your loving sister, Ruth
