Fairy silhouette with purple and teal wings

Mixed · Photo

A black silhouette of a fairy with flowing hair and a long dress or tail sits at the centre of the design, with a flower-like shape forming part of the body. Its wings are filled with purple and teal, outlined in solid black. The design is shown in a close, straight-on photograph against smooth, lightly freckled skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Ines, the dome council has finally let me into the sealed greenhouse at Kessler Bay, and you will not believe what was growing against the far wall. Long before the seal, someone had trained a vine up the frame and left it to become a shape: a dark silhouette of a woman with her hair lifting behind her, a flower for a body, and two wings, one violet, one the green-blue of a sea none of us will ever see again.

The archive says the greenhouse was called Bramble House and was kept by a botanist named Oriel Maddox, who wrote in her log every morning that the plants were listening. Nobody believed her. Then the stock thinned in the third year and the rations were cut, and her entries grew shorter, all of them about the violet lichen she had been coaxing into the wing shapes on the glass.

Yesterday I took a cutting from the flower body, the part Oriel marked with a small star, and potted it under the lamp. This morning the leaves had turned to the north wall, to the old hatch, as if waiting for someone to come through it. I have not decided whether to tell the council. Perhaps it only knows the way home, or perhaps it is simply a picture someone once loved enough to grow.

Come up when the next transfer opens, and bring your gloves and your patience. Bring the little scissors too. I want you to see it turn its face towards us, the way the light lifts its hair, as though it has been waiting for someone brave enough to open the door.

Love, Mara
