Script heart quote on upper chest
Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A heart outline is formed entirely from handwritten black script, with the words running in a continuous line around the shape. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is a uniform dark grey-black on warm skin. The heart sits centrally on the upper chest beside the collarbone, with a white neckline and a gold chain in the frame.

The night sister at St Ebba's kept a biro behind her ear and a roll of surgical tape in her pocket, and when the wards went quiet after two she wrote on whatever paper came to hand. The porters said she was writing to the sea, because she always stood at the window at the end of the corridor while she did it, and the window looked out over nothing but dark water.

One February a boy called Tobias Greave came up to the children's bay with a fever and a shoebox of letters from his father, who trimmed lamps on a rock station off the coast and had not come home in four months. The boy could not read the handwriting, which ran small and slanted and crossed itself at the edges. So Nell pulled the chair to his bed and read them to him, one by one, in the low voice she used for frightened people, until the fever broke around four and he fell asleep with his mouth open.
When he woke she had a sheet of ward paper on her knee. She had copied the last line of his father's final letter over and over, each time starting a little further along the curve, until the words bent into a heart with no beginning and no end. The pen had never lifted. "It says the same thing all the way round," the boy said, frowning at it. "That's the trick of it," Nell told him. "You can start anywhere and still arrive."
He folded the paper into quarters and slid it under his pillow. By the time the day staff came on, the chair was back against the wall and the night sister was out in the car park with the tape still in her pocket, looking at the lighthouse beam sweep the empty water the way it always did.
