Hand-drawn tattoo flash of a bold black script letter with red accents, swirling linework and dots, shown on white paper.

Script letter with red flourishes

Lettering · Mixed · Flash

The drawing shows a stylised cursive letter in thick black ink, with a looped top and a tail that sweeps to the right. Thinner black and red swirls and curls wrap around the letter, with small solid dots scattered along the lower left and right. The palette is mostly black with red highlights, set against a plain white background.

Dear Tom,

Mr Ashby has finally let me hold the good brush, the one with the sable tip that he keeps wrapped in chamois like a relic. Yesterday I spent four hours on a single capital for the Nelly Gray, a fishing smack that has been lying on the slipway since the spring gales. The owner wanted her name in black with a red shadow, and the letter that started it all was a J with a loop at the top like a question mark that has got lost on its way home.

Ashby stood behind me the whole time, saying nothing, which is worse than shouting. Every time my wrist dropped, he tapped the bench twice. By the third hour the loop closed clean, and I started the red swash that trails off the stem, the way the tide pulls at a mooring line. He only said one thing: "Leave the dots for last, girl, they're where the fish get away." So I did them last, five small blots down the lower curve, and Ashby grunted, which I have decided counts as praise.

The boat goes down to the water on Friday. I thought you might like to know that the J stands for Jack, after Father, and that I didn't tell Mrs Hollis the dots were my idea. When you're back in port, come and look for it before the varnish goes on. I'll be the one with red on my fingers.

Your loving sister, Ellen
