Script lettering across a hip
Lettering · Other · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a short phrase in dark red script lettering across the side of a hip, just above a dark waistband. The linework is smooth and even, with a single solid ink and no shading. A pale raised line runs beneath the lettering, parallel to it, and the warm skin tone and phone-camera lighting give the photo a soft, slightly filtered look.

Dora has taken it worse than any of us. She has been wearing her old wire shoes indoors since the net was packed, and when the sawdust gets under her nails she recites the line she had inked in Leeds the winter her hands bled through the rope: Find strength in pain. She says it as though it were a sum she could work out if she had enough paper. I told her the words were meant for the performing, not for living on, and she laughed until she had to sit down on a crate.
Last night she climbed the old water tower behind the field with a coil of wire over one shoulder. Half the village lads came to watch, and the Hallam boy kept his hands in his pockets the whole time. She walked the length of it with no pole and no net, nothing but the last of the lamps swinging on the hedge below. Halfway across she stopped, bent one knee, and waved at the empty field as if it were full to the rafters.
I have been sewing spangles back onto the costumes all morning. They will never see a ring again, but I cannot make my needle stop. Come in April if you can. We will have the kettle on, and I will show you the red thread I saved from the tent flap.
