Scripture verse in cursive on the shoulder
Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a three-line cursive script tattoo reading "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me" with the reference "Philippians 4:13" beneath. The lettering is fine and even in black ink, with slight variation in line weight and no shading. The skin is shown in a warm, soft-focus close crop, with the text running diagonally across the shoulder area.

The lock at Caen Hill had been stuck for three days, and I was the one walking the towpath with the windlass while Dad sat in the wheelhouse pretending his knees were fine. Water came through the gates in a brown rush and the boat dropped slowly, the way it always did, like a bucket being lowered into a well. I counted the paddles. Thirty-one turns of the handle before the top gate opened, and the cold air off the water smelled of diesel and wet leaves.

Dad never said much, but he wrote things down. On the inside of the galley cupboard, in pencil he'd sharpened with a Stanley knife, he had copied a verse from the back of a chapel hymn sheet his mother gave him in 1961. Philippians, chapter four, verse thirteen. The letters leaned forward like they were walking into weather. Every time I reached for the tin of Yorkshire tea I read it upside down, and for years I thought it was just a thing a man had on his cupboard, like a calendar or a wedding photo.
We sold the Patience in March. The buyer wanted the engine and the ropes and nothing else, so I took a screwdriver to the galley hinges the night before the sale. The cupboard door came away in my hands, heavier than I expected, grey with thirty years of steam. Under the varnish the pencil was still legible. I carried it up the lock steps on my shoulder, one slick stone at a time, and at the top I set it down on the grass, the words facing the sky, and let the water go on without me.
