Script lettering across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, turned away from the camera, with her blonde hair pinned up. Dark script lettering runs across her upper back and onto her shoulder, and a further tattoo is visible on her arm. The shot is warmly coloured, with a red patterned dress, gold straps and leafy plants framing the figure against a brick wall.

Tom, the bus left me at the Sarn Wells turn at half four, and the driver said the road east of here is nothing but sand and one sign reading NO WATER FOR 80 MILES, which he seemed to think was a joke. I have a petrol receipt for paper, a biro that skips on every second word, and the last inch of a bottle of cold tea. Don't tell Mum I sat on a kerb with a stranger's dog for three hours.

The man who runs the garage is called Ansel, and his radio only picks up the shipping forecast, which he insists is the finest poetry in England. He let me wait in the back room with the fan turning slow. Around six a lorry pulled in, its load covered in tarpaulin, and the driver, a broad man named Dorrit, said he'd take me as far as the salt pan if I didn't mind riding with a crate of tinned peaches. I asked him whether he had anyone waiting at the far end. He said his mother, who would have the kettle on whether he came or not.
I didn't tell him that you were the only one waiting for me. I thought it sounded like the sort of thing a sister says when she's frightened, so I kept it to myself and watched the dunes go pink and then grey, the way the ink on Granddad's letters faded before we ever found the box.
If the lorry breaks down, I'll walk the last miles when the ground gives its heat back. Keep the porch light on. Count the lamps for me. Your sister, Nell.
