Script lettering across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of two lines of black cursive script tattooed across the upper back, near the shoulder blade. The lettering is fine and even, with smooth connected strokes and no shading. The skin is light and the background is a blurred indoor setting, with a dark lace top and button visible at the edge of the frame.

Dear Oonagh, the ferry was late again, so I sat on the quay with your last letter and read it until the gulls lost interest in me. You wrote that the lanes above Glen Carrick are a fool's errand in February and that I should wait for the thaw like a sensible woman. I have never been sensible, as you know, and the thaw in these parts comes when it pleases.

Mr Dunleavy at the inn gave me a stick, a flask and a map drawn on the back of an old tide table. The map shows three roads that meet at a cairn and a fourth that simply stops. He told me the drovers used to say a man could follow the wrong track for a whole day and still arrive somewhere that needed him. I laughed, and he didn't.
Yesterday, past the second stile, the mist came down so thick I could not see my own boots. I stood still, as he had told me, and listened. Somewhere below, a sheep bell rang, then a second, then a boy's whistle, and I walked towards the sound with my heart going like a hammer. It was only a shepherd's lad who had lost his dog and wanted company to find it. We found the animal together, asleep in a ditch, and I have never been so glad of a muddy creature in my life.
So here is the thing I want you to know, Oonagh. I am not lost. I am only somewhere I had not planned to be, which is a different country altogether. I will write again from the pass, and if this letter reaches you before I do, keep the kettle warm.
