Script quote on upper chest
Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a two-line script quote tattooed on the upper chest, just below the collarbone and beside the shoulder. The lettering is fine black linework with a flowing, cursive form and even, solid ink. The image is taken in bright sunlight against a pale pavement, with a white top just visible at the bottom edge and the lower face cropped out of frame.

You find the lean before you find the tree. Mr Abbot's apple wall has been bowing since the February gales, and the old man has pinned a sheet of brown paper to the shed door with a list of what to do first: prop, tie, wait. You read it twice, then go out in your wellies to the south bed where the Bramley stands with its roots lifted like a hand.

Dig slowly, he wrote. Don't cut the fine roots, they're the ones that feed her. Your fingers find clay the colour of wet tobacco and a stone that rings when you knock it. Someone has carved letters into the coping above the gate, worn nearly smooth, and you can make out only the second half of a line the rain has been trying to rub away for a century: ...she will not fall. Mr Abbot's wife planted the tree the year they married. He told you that on the first day, then said nothing else about it for three weeks.
By noon you have two oak stakes driven at an angle and a length of old rope cut with a kitchen knife. The tree groans when you tighten it, a sound like a door opening in another room. You stand back and wait, as the list says, and the wind comes over the wall and pushes at the branches, and the tree leans into it and holds.
Mr Abbot is at the kitchen window with his tea. He lifts the cup an inch. That is all the thanks you'll get, and it is enough.
