Matching script quote on two upper backs
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
Two people are shown from behind with the same handwritten script quote tattooed across the upper back, one above the other, with the upper line on one person and the lower line on the other. The lettering is in black ink with fine, even linework and a slightly looped cursive form. The plain skin, soft indoor light and close framing keep the focus on the text.

Nell had counted the fence posts from Ardley Wells to the turn at Salt Flat for eleven years, and the number had never once come out the same twice. Her sister Bea sat on the bonnet of the green Morris with her boots on the bumper, pretending not to watch the dust. The bus to Carrow left at six. Nell had packed her case twice and unpacked it once.

"You'll write," Bea said. It wasn't a question, and Nell didn't answer it. She took the carpenter's pencil from behind her ear and turned over the feed-store receipt in her pocket. She wrote the first line slowly, looping the capitals the way their mother had taught them, as if the paper might object. Together forever, never apart. Her hand stayed steady until she reached the second half.
The bus came up out of the heat with its lamps still burning, though the sun had been up an hour. Bea walked her to the step and pressed the receipt into her palm, folded small. Nell didn't open it until the road had bent behind the mesquite and the driver had stopped twice for cattle. The second line was there in her sister's hand: maybe in distance, but not in heart. Beneath it, Bea had drawn a tiny arrow pointing back the way they had come.
At Carrow, Nell bought a stamp, a postcard of the bus station and a sharpened pencil. She wrote nothing on the card except the arrow, copied carefully, and addressed it to the post office at Ardley Wells. Three weeks later it came back with a second arrow drawn beside her own, and a note in the postmistress's cramped hand: she's been out on the Salt Flat road every evening, counting posts.
