Script lettering along upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a bare upper arm and shoulder, with a single line of black cursive script running vertically down the arm. The lettering uses thin, even linework with no shading, and the words are partly legible. The image is in natural tones with a plain pale wall behind, and the frame cuts off the face and the top of the body.

Inside was a single sheet, folded in four, in her father's slanted hand. He had never been a letter writer. Mostly he wrote lists on the back of feed bags: tups, diesel, ring the vet. Live by the sun, it began, and then something about the ground, and something about waking before the hens. She read it twice in the cold. The rest was about the south field, where the drainage had failed in 1987, and a warning about the gate latch that she had never once remembered to fix.
She folded it back along its creases, slid it into her pocket against her ribs, and whistled the dog round. By the time the sky went pale over the fells she had decided the field could wait one more morning, and that she would keep the letter, and go up to the south field at noon when the sun finally cleared the wall.
