Quote lettering on an upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a white bikini top and a rust-coloured sarong is photographed from the chest down, wearing two layered necklaces. A small black tattoo of the words 'i've got the world to go' sits on her upper arm, set in a plain typeface with solid black ink. The tight, intimate crop keeps the focus on the lettering against warm skin tones and a neutral background.

The milestone at the edge of Londinium has been cracked by frost since your grandfather's time, and you are kneeling in wet grass beside it, picking dried moss from the numerals with a bone knife because the surveyor will not pay for a new stone. Behind you the ferry is calling for passengers. Your satchel holds a wax tablet, a sealed letter for a cousin in Eboracum, and three copper coins, which is the whole of what the Procurator's office has given you for the road north.

The surveyor, a thin man called Priscus who counts his paces aloud, tells you the road is six hundred miles of nothing worth looking at. You tell him you have heard that about every road. He laughs, the first time he has laughed all week, and hands you a folded map drawn on linen, its coastline wrong and its rivers doubling back on themselves. "Carry it anyway," he says. "Nobody has ever arrived with the right one."
You cross the river on the ferry with your sandals tied to your satchel. On the far bank an old woman sells figs from a basket and asks where you are bound. You tell her the truth, that you have the whole of the world to go, and she looks at your coins and says the world is generous with the first mile and stingy with the rest. She is right about the first mile. By dusk the linen map is soaked through and the road keeps unrolling ahead of you, pale and patient, so you walk on into the dark, counting milestones under your breath and not yet minding the cold.
