Vertical geometric arrow tattoo on the upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A small vertical tattoo of an arrow built from stacked diamonds, zigzag lines and a pointed head and tail sits along the centre of the upper back. The linework is crisp and even in black ink, with the lattice of fine lines forming a symmetrical pattern. The tattoo is framed by the straps of a black top against warm, smooth skin, with the photograph focused closely on the design.

Dear Tom, the rain has got into the north range again and Mr Hollis has set buckets along the great hall where the minstrels' gallery used to be. I went up the tower stair this morning with the lantern because the surveyor from Lancaster wants the lintels drawn before the frost. Halfway up, on the ninth step, I found your mark. You will remember scratching it there the summer you were fourteen, when Father tanned your hide for it.

It is the arrow Father taught us, a stack of diamonds with zigzags running down the shaft and a point at either end, the old pattern for a way through. Except it is not quite the one you cut. Someone has gone over it in soot, drawn the lattice finer, and turned the lower point so it faces the floor rather than the sky.

I asked Hollis and he laughed and said the Ashby boys go down there for dares. But the cellar door at the foot of the stair has been bricked up since before the war, and the mortar is fresh. I laid my palm flat against it and it was cold as a spoon left in the well.

I have not told the surveyor. I have sat on the ninth step with the lantern and counted the diamonds, eleven of them, which is exactly how many steps lie below the bricks. Come home at Michaelmas and bring the good chisel. Your loving sister, Agnes.
