Script lettering and aeroplane on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of black script lettering tattooed across the ankle and lower leg, with a small aeroplane silhouette in the centre of the words. The script is thin and even, and only parts of the wording are clearly legible. The ink is solid black with no colour, and the leg fills the frame against a dark seat or upholstery.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The envelope had been on the sorting shelf since Tuesday, and by Thursday Ruth Akers had read the postmark often enough to be sure it came from nowhere on the county map. Stamped Hanger Field, no year, the ink gone the colour of weak tea. She carried it out to the perimeter fence anyway, because the Auster was idling on the grass and its pilot, a thin man called Osei who wore his flying goggles pushed up like spectacles, had once said he would carry post to anywhere if asked properly.

He turned the envelope over and read the address twice. Her own name was on the front, in a hand she did not recognise as hers until she saw the loop on the capital R, the one her mother had scolded her out of at nine. 'Someone who is going to be very surprised,' she said, when he asked who it was for. He laughed, then didn't, and told her to climb in before the wind changed.

They rose over the orchard with the late apples blushing on the branches below, the rows running out in neat green lines toward the village. Ruth held the letter in her lap and did not open it. Somewhere past the church spire, Osei dipped a wing so she could see the hedge where she had lost her first glove as a girl, and she understood that nobody had asked her to read it yet.

When they landed again the sun was low and the pilot taxied without a word. Ruth stepped down, walked to the back gate of the farmhouse, and found her mother on the step, shelling beans into a bowl. Ruth sat beside her and broke the seal. Inside was one line, written in her own hand: Stay until the frost, and do not believe the postmark.
